Image Via First Novel

Hello ECI832,

This blog post marks the completion of my major learning project.  It was a great experience while exploring the social media applications such as Snap Chat, Instagram, and educational apps such as My Script calculator and  Wolfram Algebra Course AssistantAs educators, I feel that it is important that we have a solid understanding of the digital world and of the apps and programs that our students are using regularly.

In my first blog post, I reflected on how our major project connects to Mike Ribble’s nine elements of Digital Citizenship which I think are most important need to stay on the path to document my journey and reflect my personal project. In my second blog post, I review the features of snap chat, and what the app has to offer in the educational sector. I realized that Snapchat had so much to offer and also posed many concerns, so in my third blog post, I dived in deep by reviewing the important documents of snap chat i.e.  Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. My fourth blog post concentrated on how snap chat can be used in education, and how educators can make use of snap chat to post short videos and photos to give a highlight of the day’s content, summarize the content covered in the days and so much more. In my fifth blog post, I documented my journey by reviewing the features of Instagram and my sixth blog post focused on reviewing its terms of services and its privacy policy. In my seventh blog post, I learned how Instagram can be used in education, and how educators can make use of Instagram to reach students beyond the school walls.

In my eighth and ninth blog post, I reviewed the features of My Script Calculator, Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.  and how this app can do wonders for math class. In my tenth and eleventh blog post, I review the features of Wolfram algebra course assistant, Terms of service and Privacy Policy.

Overall my journey in this course was so interactive and informative and I just can’t believe that how fast the course ended. I gained an enormous amount of information and I treasure these memories for the rest of my life. Thank you Dr. Alec Couros and my fellow classmates for the support and some outstanding discussions.

ANALYZING WOLFRAM ALGEBRA COURSE ASSISTANT FEATURES AND TOS

Image Via iTunes

Hello ECI832!

The feeling of reviewing a math app for a mathematics teacher is nothing but a treat and if such app has a potential to transform the old boring perception of a math class into an exciting experience is just like a cherry on the top. Wolfram algebra course assistant is a wonderful app which is devoted to helping students master the art of solving algebra problems, integration of such technology into the classroom helps math teachers to deliver the subject more efficiently where students can find n number of ways to solve a particular problem. I don’t think to define what this application does using words, does it justice. My video review below might give you a clear idea of what this application has to offer.

Terms of Services and Privacy Policy

Wolfram service specifies in their terms of services that if the user is under age 18 they may use Wolfram applications only if they have permission from a parent, legal guardian, or teacher. By using their service, the user acknowledges that they are over the age of 18 and legally able to form contracts or that an adult with authority to act on their behalf has agreed to these terms and to be accountable for ensuring your compliance with them in your use of the service. By putting input into Wolfram application in the form of a query, the users are not giving up any of the ownership or rights to the content. The Privacy policy further assures that as a service provider they comprehend the user’s apprehensions about how your information is used and shared, and they endeavor to use such information cautiously and sensibly.

The application or the website collects both personally identifiable data about the user and non-personally-identifiable data about the user’s experience when they access the Wolfram services. The personal data that they collect on their website or through their service consists of data that the user submits such as name, email address, and other personal information that the user willingly deliver. Since involvement in these actions is voluntary, the user has a choice whether or not to disclose such data. In addition to that, the application or the website collects non-personally recognizable data whenever the user interacts with the websites, including Internet Protocol (IP) address, browser type and version, geographical region, referral URLs, and other data automatically supplied by common web browsers. The service provider acknowledges that they may release personally identifying information only in the circumstances where they have to comply with lawful court orders. Overall, I believe that their privacy policy is straightforward and safe for young users.

Wolfram algebra course assistant is a great educational application to integrate technology into the math classroom and make it fun and interesting experience. For now, I would love to hear your thoughts and concerns in the comments about using Wolfram algebra in the classroom and would you think about using it in your school?

Hello ECI832!

There is a heated debate about the effects of using technology in teaching mathematics. In traditional math classrooms, the educator leads a great demonstration of skills on the black or whiteboards followed by an individual practice. Students sit in line looking at the educator as they demonstrate the procedure to learn. Fortunately, this image of a traditional math lesson is changing. Integration of technology in the math classroom has increased and thanks to technology and few wonderful math educational apps the whole perception learning and teaching of mathematics has changed. Many believe that an algebra class can be a boring and stressful experience, and for whatsoever reason, students think that only a teacher can help them to calculate the algebraic problems with appropriate steps. Wolfram algebra course assistant can be an excellent aid for students which has the potential to make algebra class easy and interesting.

REVIEWING HANDWRITING CALCULATOR

Image Via Youtube

Hello ECI832!

The feeling of reviewing a math app for a mathematics teacher is just like a kid opening a present. I was excited about every step and to be honest I was very happy the whole time in the due process. An app which actually recognizes complex mathematical equation was all that needed to make my day. The application permits the user to literally write calculations with their finger and the results are calculated instantly and how cool is that. I don’t think to describe what this application does using words, does it justice. My video review below might give you a clear idea of what this application has to offer.

Given its multiple abilities to calculate a range of mathematical equations, from simple to complex problems, the application can be used in math classes. Obviously, the idea is not to teach children how to solve equations, but to integrate technology in the classroom. It could be a great addition into a math class to transform a perception of a boring math session into an interesting discovery of an application which allows them to do mathematical operations with a freehand script of expressions on the touch screen of their smart devices. Children can learn to use technology and simultaneously solve mathematical equations, they write equations by hand, the application processes those equations and converts them into digital format and calculate the answer. Children can use scribble out motions to eliminate parts of the equations if necessary.

My Script calculator is a great educational application that helps integrate technology into the math classroom and make it fun and interesting experience. For now, I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments about My Script calculator in education and would you think about using it in your classroom or school?

SCRIBBLE OUT A MATH EQUATION TO GET ANSWER

Image Via Linkedin

Hello ECI832!

As a mathematics lecturer and a math lover, I am having a great time reviewing the features of MyScript Calculator and to be honest I am also having a lot of fun using the app itself. From my 7 years of teaching experience, I have sensed a great deal of anxiety in my students whenever they listen to the course name or just the name math makes them uncomfortable. Even outside the classrooms the more I talk to people about math, the more I hear this word: “I don’t like math because math problems have only one answer. I’m really bad at math how can I get better. Thanks to technology and few wonderful math educational apps the whole perception of mathematics has changed. Many believe that a mathematics class can be a traumatic experience, and for whatsoever reason, individuals link math closely to intelligence. Many think that if you are genius and smart, you can do the math and, if you are not smart, you can’t, but I totally disagree with this statement. Math can be fun and few interesting apps make math even easier, fun experience and one of such app is My script calculator.

Gif Via Giphy

MyScript Calculator is a charismatic application which is compatible for both iOS and Android devices and allows the user to do mathematical operations with the freehand script of expressions on a touch screen of smart devices such as tablets, smartphones. This is a free application which won the Mobile App Showdown award at CES 2013. Our smartphone’s these days contains a rudimentary calculator, but entering complex math isn’t always easy and is not always user-friendly but MyScript Calculator permits the user to write out math operations as one would write on paper and then solve them. The simple looking main screen of the application resembles a graph sheet where the user can script or scribble a mathematical operation and in the top right corner of the screen we have the options to redo or undo the work or you can just scribble on the calculations and it is gone. In the top left corner, the user can open a menu where they can access the configuration with options to configure the number of decimals displayed by the application, go to the left-handed entry and other operations. The application also has an interesting environment called palm rejection, when turned on, the application will overlook the part of the hand that touches the screen, it is useful for those who obviously put their hand on the writing surface of the device when drawing the numbers with a stylus.

The application is ideal for students or any individuals who want to make a swift calculation, MyScript Calculator converts numbers and symbols written by hand in a clear notation instantly and then shows the user answer of a mathematical expression.  The user can perform various operations such as addition, subtract, multiply and division, and the application does not limit to that extent. The user can also solve complex trigonometric and calculus functions by writing the problems on the screen. The application supports surprisingly complex expressions, which allow the user to add exponents, draw the root symbol for square roots, draw a line to divide by another number etc.

Terms of services :
My script calculator specifies in their privacy policy that neither the sites nor any MyScript Products are intended for children under the age of 13. By agreeing to the terms of services, the user agrees to comply with all the terms and conditions of the Privacy Policy. MyScript states that it is committed to continuously developing innovative services to better serve users of their technology and recognize that privacy as an important aspect, therefore they have designed and manage their services keeping in mind the protection of privacy of their users. This Policy describes the types of personal information that they collect when using MyScript application or their sites and are intended to provide services and develop the application. The personal identifying information which is collected is deleted within three months after a user deletes their account. My script claims that they do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from anyone under the age of 13 and will delete such personal information as early as possible. A commendable aspect of the privacy policy is that the service provider assures that they do not rent or sell any personal identifying information to other establishments or individuals, without the user’s consent. Overall, I believe that their privacy policy is straightforward and pretty safe for young users.

Finally, I believe that MyScript Calculator is a fun, extremely helpful educational application which can help students and teachers in making math class or a math assignment a fun and joyful experience. In my next post, I will be digging deep into the application by performing some simple to complex mathematical operation. For now, I would love to hear your thoughts and concerns on MyScript Calculator and its educational value and usage?

REACHING BEYOND THE SCHOOL WALLS

Image Via Edtech Review

Hello ECI832!

Technology is already sweeping through classrooms and as educators, we are well aware of it. Education today is drastically evolving and so are our students. Today’s children are budding up in a digital world and Social media is integrated as a dominant part of our youngsters. Teaching in this digital era for the students who consider themselves as digitally a step ahead of their teachers poses many challenges for educators. We are sometimes worried that what we produce does not extend beyond the walls of our classroom and thanks to social media and technology we can take teaching and education beyond the walls of classroom and Instagram can be an ideal tool for it.

As I have stated before in few of my blog posts, one of the hardest task for a teacher is to make students pay attention in the class when most of them these days are busy sneak peeking at their phones, So, if we can’t beat them lets join them. Educators can make use of Instagram to post short videos and photos to give a highlight of the day’s content and also summarize the content covered in the days. It is a great way to showcase live examples to students from its story feature, we can connect with children, parents, and colleagues. Right from artistically broadcasting class assignments to sharing teaching moments and ideas through photos, as educators we can find numerous unique ways to use Instagram in educational setup.

Social media in the classroom is a great way to attract students towards interactive education. In this digital age, our classroom must not necessarily be, how it used to be when we were students. For educators, there are many exciting tools to help our students and Instagram is one among them, incorporating Instagram in the classrooms is one of the easy and effective ways to make education fun in the classroom and to take it way beyond the classroom walls. Instagram encourages collaboration, today’s children are already collaborated outside school but in a different context, but if we

Gif Via Giphy

incorporate Instagram in school activities we can collaborate students about the school activities in the school and also beyond the school walls. It helps to build a community within the classroom, students engage in knowledge building together around a new topic or an idea, like have student browse historical photos and create a bulletin board or poster display. It helps to build creativity in students while they are given a task to create an image or a poster in the educational context, it also aids to showcase their work and get instant feedback from teachers, friends, and family. This helps students to refine and develop their artistic abilities and provide them confidence.

There are many educational benefits of Instagram in the educational context. The article 10 Surprising Ways to Use Instagram in the Classroom narrates 10 awesome ways we can use Instagram in the classroom. Another article in Emerging Ed Tech goes a step ahead in explaining Instagram and how can the application deliver educational benefits and finally if you still have a question on why schools should be using Instagram this article might change your perspective on this amazing multimedia application. To wrap this post, I would like to know, as an educator what do you think about Instagram? have you used it in your classroom, if yes How?

INSTA REVIEW –DIGGING INTO TOS AND PRIVACY POLICY

Hello ECI832!

Social media tools have evolved as an integral part of our youth and have become a backbone of the way they communicate these days. They connect to each other, share news, calendar things. While these applications are beneficial tools for exchanging information many users sign into it without understanding the terms of services and its privacy policy. The terms of service are perhaps one of the least-read parts of any social networking application or websites and a user’s normally hop over it while registering and later are concerned that their private information is being circulated far more widely than they should be. In this blog post, I will analyze the terms of services and privacy policy of Instagram.

Instagram is a digital photo sharing application which permits its user to add filters and effects to images, videos and share them easily over the Internet. Instagram is a very popular social networking application which is currently owned by Facebook. It is a free server application which allows users to share their snaps with friends and family. By using the Instagram service, the users are agreeing to be bound by its terms and conditions. An Instagrammer must be 13 years or older to use the services of the

Gif Via Giphy

Instagram and is responsible for any action that happens under his/her username name. By agreeing to the terms and conditions of the application the user acknowledges that he/she will not post any obscene photos or videos and do not indulge in mistreating, harassing, bullying, impersonating or intimidating other Instagram users, even an International user must agree to obey all local laws regarding online behavior and adequate content. An Instagrammer is accountable for their behavior online and completely responsible for their actions in the application (posting images, videos, audio).

The Proprietary Rights section on Instagram clearly states that the user owns the photographs, other images or video/audio content that he/she posts on Instagram. The service provider does not become the proprietor of the posted content. The Copyright law itself (in regards to the country where the images are replicated or shared) is what administers the use of your Instagram multimedia images and other content by any third parties. By the benefit of sharing images on Instagram, the user is not giving up the rights on their content and for most uses outside of Instagram, any third party should be seeking consent from the user to use your images or other content. Anyhow, there is some exception in some situations which is termed as fair use in USA, Canada, and UK which allow individuals to use Instagrammer’s content under few circumstances without the user’s approval.

In its official privacy policy, Instagram plainly lays out what information it collects from its users. The Instagram terms of service and privacy policy state that, as a service provider they collect information on their users in a variety of different ways from the provided information. Which means that they can monitor the users IP addresses, the websites the user visits, whereabouts, acquaintances, communication’s, etc. Instagram may use and share this data with their third party associates and marketing partners to improve and personalize the user’s experience, improve and evolve new features and offer new and exciting services for their users. This means that as a service provider Instagram is not only the sole organization who has the access to the user’s information but their associates also have the same. Instagram clearly states that a user is completely responsible for their safety as they are responsible for keeping their password secure yet they share information about the users with their associates and this has caused some safety concerns among the users. The application permits the user to make their account private so that other Instagrammers cannot use searchable hashtags in their content, a user can also limit Instagram’s ability to track their whereabouts, especially when a user is on a mobile device. A user can not only turn off any location settings in the Instagram application on a mobile device but can also check their profile page for the list of all of their image geotags.

Finally, I fell that it is always good that a user should be informative and thoughtful about the terms of services and privacy policy so that they would be prepared to oversee the ways in which the information about them, their content and private information that is shared on social networks could compromise their security.

Instagram has so much to offer and also poses many concerns, an article Understanding Instagram’s privacy settings states how easy it is to trade away your privacy in social networking apps like Instagram and explains steps how to take some of it back and be secured, I think that every social networking tool has its pros and cons. In my next post, I will be reviewing the app’s educational value and how best we can use it in the educational realm. For now, I would love to hear your thoughts and concerns about Instagram’s privacy implications and its educational value and usage?

MY JOURNEY IN INSTAGRAM

Image Via digitalreview

Hello ECI 832!

It has been a wonderful journey so far this semester and I have been having a lot of fun with few interesting apps that our youths are using today. I guess my question on why these apps are so popular among our youngsters has been answered and I think around these apps no wonder that our kids feel as if they are in a candy store. As I have stated before in my previous posts, as an educator I feel that it is important that we have  deep understanding of the applications and programs that our students are using and if we are equipped with appropriate knowledge about these popular apps we will be in the position to point our students in right direction and make them a responsible and efficient digital user and an ideal digital citizen. So, here I am starting my journey on reviewing Instagram.

GIF Via Giphy

Unlike me, if you are an active social app user or have a young technology user around you, then you should have come across Instagram. This is a popular social media application which is quite interesting among our youngsters today. The application was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger and launched in October 2010. Instagram is a digital photo sharing and social networking application which permits the user to share photos and videos with their followers. The application is available for both Android and IOS users and presently has more than 90 million active users around the world.

Instagram allows its users to upload photos and videos and share it with their followers by adding various digital filters. The application makes it quite interesting and realistic because of its geotags feature as the user can add the location from where they are sharing the content. It facilitates the users to post living moments and I guess this feature drew most of its current users towards it. The user can also incorporate hashtags to their posts and link the images or videos to the other content on the Instagram. An Instagrammer can upload images and videos while the others follow the users feeds and geotags with the user’s name and whereabouts. The applications allow a user to set their account as private which creates a requirement that any new followers must seek an approval and only when the request is approved the followers can view the feeds or comment on it. The app also allows the user to connect the Instagram account with other social networking sites, allowing them to share uploaded images or videos to those sites. The hashtag embedding feature in Instagram benefit users sees both multimedia messages and other iInstagrammer’s After its launch, the application took the whole process of creating and sharing multimedia messages to a different level, with its flashy filters and cool sharing options within no time it gained popularity among youngsters.

Social media tools have evolved as an integral part of our youth and has become a backbone of the way how they communicate these days. They connect to each other, share news, calendar things. It must not be a surprise for us as educators that they also use these tools for school work. As I have stated before no digital tool is fundamentally evil and If someone wants to be mischievous and misuse it, they can and they will find ways but the same platform can be used positively in many ways and I think we can direct them to use it in a responsible and useful manner. Instagram has so much to offer and also offers many apprehensions, in coming days I’ll be analyzing more about the applications platform, its terms of services, privacy and security implications and mainly its educational value and how best we can use in educational context. For now, I would love to hear about your thoughts and concerns on Instagram?

SNAPCHAT IN EDUCATION

Image Via NPRED

Hello ECI832!

Most of us would probably agree to the fact that social media tools have revolutionized almost every area of life and education sector is no exception, I believe that Snapchat has so much to offer especially for an educator to get closer to their students and bridge the gap. I think that no digital tool is fundamentally evil and If someone wants to be mischievous and misuse it, they can and they will find ways but the same platform can be used positively in many ways. Snapchat has evolved as a fun tool which permits the users to send funny picture and videos and I think we can find ways to make learning fun for our students by incorporating Snapchat into education and take learning outside the classroom.

One of the hardest task for a teacher is to make students pay attention in the class when most of them these days are busy sneak peeking at their phones, So, if we can’t beat them lets join them. Educators can make use of snapchat to post short videos and photos to give  highlight of the day’s content and also summarize the content covered in the days. It is a great way to showcase live examples to students for subjects such as math, science. Below are few easy ways to start incorporating Snapchat into education.
Reminders: Almost every student are on snapchat and I think it can be a great tool if used as a remainder to let the students know about the upcoming task, activity or materials to bring to class.
Content Examples: As I discussed earlier snapchatting is a great way to showcase live examples to students for subjects such as math, science, it makes it easier for a teacher to introduce a concept in a realistic and practical way.
Improving vocabulary: we can improve student’s vocabulary by creating flashcards and by sharing stories filled with humorous, exciting images captioned with vocabulary words or ask them to do the same which creates an interactive environment and aid learning.
Snapchat Stories: Stories feature in snapchat will provide us a best and exciting way to share content and it permits students to view this information instantly and in their convenient time, It is way better than emailing them or handing them printed copies. In snap chat’s story feature the app allows the user to send series of sequential snaps of

short videos or images and add texts, captions, bitmojis, geofilters, drawings and the user can direct these snaps to a specific group. The stories which are posted are available for viewing to our followers for whole day so that students can clearly follow the teacher and review the content frequently.

Engage students with Question & Answer-  As an educator there are many ways we can use snapchat to engage our students and the best way is to answer a student question instantly and post a question or any communication which is way better than communicating in emails and I guess no student can resist having an unopened Snap just sitting there.
Connecting students to content related accounts: Snapchat provides a great platform for educators to connect our students with interesting SnapChat accounts in our content area. These accounts may post informational ‘stories’ so that students can be learning all the time. It is a great way to teach digital citizenship and a best way for them to utilize a social media tool and be engaged in virtual learning.
Congratulate: Finally, we can congratulate a class or a student on their performance instantly and in a fun filled way. Snapchat adds cool and fun perception for the old -fashioned process and brings teacher and student closer to each other.

When snapchat arrived and became popular among our youth there were many concerns for their safety. Many teacher and school divisions sent advice’s home to parents of the potential risks of the mobile application as it permits youths a way to send photos and videos to their peers, or even worse unknown persons and in no time, Snapchat earned negative status.

When we give it perception, we understand that in the initial stages all social media tools were a cause for concern when it comes to the safety of children. Today, schools across the country are using various social media platforms to engage with students and communities. I believe Snapchat can be a great way to engage our students and take learning outside the classroom. There are many innovative teachers who have successfully integrated snapchat into their teaching practices, in an Article Jacquie Lee writes about Psychology professor Michael Britt, showing how he is using Snapchat in his introductory psychology course at Marist College. Britt takes “snaps” of real-life examples of what he is teaching about and sends them out right before exams. Stockton University Public Relations Professor Ai Zhang writes in her article about 5 Ways to Use Snapchat as A Teaching and Learning Tool in Higher Education, she also writes about ways that Snapchat can “humanize you as a teacher. while wrapping this post, a popular and highly trafficked article written by A.J. JULIANI, caught my attention, he is a Director of Technology & Innovation for Centennial School District and has written a very thoughtful article “The Complete Guide to Snapchat for Teachers and Parents” He provides an excellent overview and tips for configuration and general use, and a few great ideas for integrating snapchat in classroom.

Finally, I can’t wait to see how Snapchat evolves in education and I hope to see positive things happening. For now, I would love to hear your thoughts and concerns in the comments about snapchat in education and are you thinking about using it in your classroom or school?

DIVING DEEP INTO SNAPCHAT

Image Via Total

Hello ECI832!

I am having a great time reviewing the features of snapchat and to be honest I am also having a lot of fun using the app itself. An important thing that I realized when I was reviewing this app is that I got to know a lot of information about the application which I would have never focused on if I was just a normal user. Reading about the terms and services, privacy policy I got to know what exactly Snap Inc. is aiming to meet and offer. Both the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy are important documents and I think all Snap chatters should read them, but the reality is that no one reads them.

Snap Inc. has drafted the terms of services so that the user will know the rules and regulations that govern the relationship with snapchat. Although the terms of services of Snap Inc. looks plain and simple as any others of its counterpart, I felt as if it is just like a customary contract but later realized that one should carefully look deep into it.

GIF Via GIPHY

By agreeing to the terms, the user is legally bound by it. Snap Inc. has two set of terms of services, one for its users within the United States and another for the users who live outside the United States. Both of them are identical to each other with few exceptions.

Snap Inc. specifies who can use their services. A snap chatter must be 13 years or older to create an account and use services of the application, this surprised me because I have personally seen a lot of kids who were younger than the specified age limit set by the Snap Inc. I guess these terms have been abused a lot by our kids today. Snap Inc permits its users to use their services worldwide with royalty-free, non-assignable, non-exclusive, revocable, and non-sub licensable license. By giving a consent to their terms, snapchat permits its users to create, post, upload, send, accept and store content, when the user does that they keep the rights of that content and in-return permits Snap Inc. to use the same. For all the content the user post’s or submits to the application mainly  the public content, the user gives consent for Snap Inc. and their affiliates globally for a royalty-free, sublicensable, and transferable license to host, store, use, display, replicate, change, adapt, edit, publish, and distribute that content. Snap Inc. claims that this license is for a limited operational purpose in order to improve, provide, promote their services and to explore and evolve new ideas.

When a user posts a content as public, Snap Inc.considers the same as fundamentally public content and the same is of public interest, thus granting a license to Snap Inc.for the broader use of the same. In addition to permitting Snap Inc. the above-mentioned rights the user also permits Snap Inc. uninterrupted license to make imitative works, endorse, display, broadcast, syndicate, sublease and publicly exhibit Public Content in any form and in any methods of distribution. The user also grants permission to Snap Inc. not only to use the content but also the user’s name, voice for commercial use and that means that the user will not be eligible to any compensation from Snap Inc. if the same is used commercially.

Privacy policy:

Snap Inc. is a multimedia messaging company which provides fast and exciting ways to express ones live in moments. When a user uses their services they share information with the service provider, directly and indirectly. The information collected by the service provider can and may be used in numerous ways. The privacy policy of Snap Inc. outlines how the information is collected and used. There are three basic categories of information that Snap Inc. collects from its users. Information the user chooses to give Snap.inc., Information that Snap.inc. gets when the user uses the services, Information Snap.inc gets from third parties.

When a user uses the application, the service provider (Snap Inc.) collects various information about the user such as, username, password, email address phone numbers, age and date of birth, photograph etc. and not to mention the Snaps and Chats which you send to your friends. Snap Inc. also collects data such as Device Information, Device Phonebook, Location Information, Log Information and some of them are shared with Snap chatters, business partners, and the general public.

I think that Snapchat has so much to offer and also poses many concerns. Primarily, there is no actual information available about how may underage young users are on Snapchat and I think that itself poses a problem. If someone wants to lie about their age when signing up for snapchat they can and any child with a smartphone and an intent can easily figure that out. As I stated earlier, Snap Inc. specifies who can use their services. A snap chatter must be 13 years or older to create an account and use services of the application and to my knowledge it is one of those social apps which facilitates the youngest user group, this surprised me because I have personally seen a lot of kids who were younger than the specified age limit set by the snapchat. I guess this terms have been abused a lot by our kids today and is it safe for the kids? Who does not fully comprehend the concept of sharing over social media.

Snaps that user sends don’t really disappear. This contradicts what snapchat claimed initially that the snaps the user sends disappear in designated time and hence it is safe but there are a lot of speculations in this regard and to strengthen that claim Snapchat has backed off from their claim that snaps disappear, but users are still using the service as if the snaps are disappearing. According to an article from KSL.com which refers to the forensics firm investigation states that ‘Deleted’ Snapchat photos saved in phone data, can be examined as evidence” and Richard Hickman a digital forensics examiner states that “The actual app is even saving the picture. They claim that it’s deleted and it’s not even deleted. It’s actually saved on the phone”. So, what are the risks? it can be as many as one can imagine.

app was updated with Snap Maps feature which allows the snap chatters checkout the events and news from across the globe as well as share their location and according to the article in Guiding Tech, privacy advocates and media across the globe isn’t all that thrilled about the feature, primarily due to the privacy and security concerns surrounding the use or rather, misuse of Snap Map feature and questions that, snap map is a threat to privacy?

As I stated in my previous post, Snapchat has so much to offer and also poses many concerns too. I think that no digital tool is fundamentally evil, and Snapchat is no exception. If someone wants to be mischievous and misuse it, they can and they will find ways but the same platform can be used positively if it is used appropriately. Just because one can abuse something doesn’t mean that we should have a bad perception of it. In my next post, I will be reviewing the app’s educational value and how best we can use it in the educational realm. For now, I would love to hear your thoughts and concerns on snap chat’s privacy implications and its educational value and usage?
