Digital identity means so much more to me than it was before. Prior to this course my understanding about digital identity was just posting a decent photo over internet and being present in online spaces, only after my previous course with Dr Alec Couros I understood that digital identity it more than just posting a photo and being present online, instead it defines who and what we are in this digital era. I think that our digital identity is the digital footprints that we are leaving behind in online spaces and as educators we should be very cautious about our digital identities so that we can be the best example for our students.

Digital identity is how we showcase ourselves in the digital world. It is very important to have a good status online because we will be judged and take into account more seriously and our digital identity shows how organised and structured we are in our real life. Back in days a good physical/personal identity was everything that an individual would have focused on and they worked hard to maintain a reputed identity, which was the ultimate thing that elevated their reputation in the society and social life, but today things have changed, we are living in a digital era and there is a need for us to maintain a reputed digital identity too.

My PastMy digital presence was not always perfect and professional. I was introduced to internet at the very young age in a country where technology was booming. I first entered into online spaces through Orkut and later Facebook. I used to post lame pictures and annoying posts never understanding the consequences and my vocabulary was all over the place. I never thought that there was something called as digital identity and I have to be more keen towards my online interactions, anyhow, what can one expect from a person who discovered internet at a very young and versatile age. I was irresponsible and dumb, my idea about digital identity was limited and my online interactions was just to fancy myself in front of my peers in school.

My Present – Now, the digital me is much better than what it used to be, I have a professional twitter account and course blogs to showcase my learning and share my ideas with the world, as for my Facebook account, I am more cautious on what I post and comment on. I have come a long way from an irresponsible and dumb technology user to a more polished professional individual. I have realized that an online presence can be a vital tool for more than just employment purpose, it defines who I am, how I treat people and handle situations.

My Future –  For the future, I plan to be more professional online. I have to construct a strong digital presence so that it will nurture my growth in the academic world. I believe that internet is a very powerful tool and as educators we have to be watchful of our digital identities. It is very important how we present ourselves on various social media platforms as it can have a negative effect on our professional life, so I want to be more vigilant on these platforms and make sure I leave behind a positive digital footprint. I plan to be a creative person online and become more productive and least vulnerable.

As an educator I see a strong need to educate our students the importance of digital identity, they are born in the digital world and sometimes are so naive that they do not understand consequences of having a negative digital reputation. As the article Teacher’s Guide to Digital Citizenship states “either educators nor parents have the means to completely control how students use technology. That only makes it more important for educators to address digital citizenship in the classroom, so students will have a better idea of what they’re getting into once outside of it”. Our students are in a digital age where everything can be googled and online privacy and security has become a laughing stock, they have a long way to go and have no idea about


their digital identity and reputation, they may not comprehend the consequences of having a negative digital identity and as educators we must tailor them to perfection so that they leave behind an appropriate digital footprint, which in-return nurture their growth. Social media bullying has become a serious problem today, the article at No states that children were often bullied at school or in their neighborhood. But today, with the increased use of the Internet, children are now being bullied in all locations and at all times, the article sheds light on different area where children are bullied because of have a bad digital reputation or lack of knowledge about digital identity. So it is high time that we do something about it. As in my fellow classmate Amy B, states in her recent blog post, we have to also prepare students for a digital world that doesn’t fully exist yet, we have to ensure that they are equipped with the right knowledge so that they can have a productive future.

Finally, it leaves me with a question that, what challenges lies ahead for us as educators in teaching the digital natives the importance of digital identity when they assume that they are more tech savvy than us? and misunderstand that we are controlling their digital life?

It has been a great journey so far in this course, I am really enjoying it and collaborating with my fellow classmates makes it more interesting just like a cherry on the cake. I have got to learn so much more about digital citizenship and where our youngsters are today’s in term of their digital citizenship. Robyn D. Shulman article help me in understanding more about the strategic areas from which digital citizenship can be better understood and the article further aided me the immediate need and importance of fostering better digital citizens today. I learned what is media literacy and why increase media literacy, I realized the fact that the world today is divided digitally into Digital natives, Digital immigrants and I understood the responsibilities of educators in this digital era. Finally, the article from Terry Heick further supported my decision on reviewing social media app and document my journey as more and more students interact digitally today with content, one another, and various communities, the concept of digital citizenship becomes increasingly important.

So far this semester I have been researching a lot on my major project.  I spend most of my day exploring Snap Chatting and Instagram, questioning myself on how and why are these apps so popular among youngsters. As i outlined in my Introductory blog post I have heard a lot about these apps as my students are on these apps on a regular basis but I haven’t used it personally and it would be a great journey as to know why and how these apps are so popular among our youngsters and what is our responsibility in making them digitally literate. weeks from the class readings and discussions I realized the immediate importance of digital citizenship and media literacy in our youth. Furthermore, I have come to realize that in order to educate my students the appropriate use of these app’s and their behave online it is important for me to understand these app’s from top to bottom. I am diving in deep and dissecting these app’s layer by layer using critical media lens, exploring its pros and cons, app platform to the terms of Service and privacy implications to educational value and usage. Further, My Love and Passion for Mathematics has motivated me to explore and examine educational apps such as. Wolf Algebra Course Assistant, Number line and My Script calculator. These app’s will really aid our students and mathematics will be a joyful journey. I have always been fascinated by my mathematical studies and having a flair for the subject has inspired me to go out of my comfort zone and take math into a whole new level in classroom.

While continuing to explore  Snapchat, Instagram, Wolf Algebra Course Assistant, Number line and My Script calculator apps as part of my final project, I’ve come across many hiccups, achievements, and a lot of information download. As this week we were told to reflect on how our major project connects to Mike Ribble’s nine elements of Digital Citizenship which i think are most important need to stay on path to document my journey and reflect my personal project. I want to focus on and incorporate, digital etiquette, digital rights and responsibilities, Digital Literacy, Digital Communication. My aim is to actively be a part in technology and get in-depth knowledge on the apps that I am working on. While using it I want to understand efficiently so that I can steer my students in the right direction. Like many others it seems that I have taken a long time to set path in executing my major project but I hope to start a journey of learning and knowledge sharing by exploring these apps both as a student and a teacher. I hope that my project will help my fellow educators in guiding our students to have a healthy digital life.


Gearing up students towards the digital future

 In the globally well-connected world that we are living today where technology plays a vital role and becoming more and more efficient and essential, the question that pops up in my mind is “Are we preparing our children for the future? There are many speculations with respect to preparation of the children for the future but how do we get there? I believe that the current educational model needs to be rationalized to understand and achieve the skills and characteristics which will be very important for our students in the future.


I think most of us agree that the major trend in the education today has one or the other means of entanglement with technology integration. As schools explore different ways to embed technology into classroom, educators are trying different methods for effective incorporation that promotes student success and knowledge gain. Technology has provided students with many vibrant learning tools like smartphones, tablets, laptops etc and these tools are the most adaptable learning tools in the history of education where our students has immediate access to enormous

amount of information which is both informative and collaborative. In this digital era students are equipped with tools and technology which enables them to travel and explore the world even without stepping out of their house, see the trending things happening around the globe by their finger tips from their smartphone, speak and collaborate with people from different countries instantly. The world today is open to them and waiting for them to discover it and we as educators must ensure that they are well prepared to encounter the various challenges they might face and safely sail through digital world.

As I was going through this week’s reading materials I found many interesting articles to support my views on this blog post, 2020 Future Work Skills article from this week’s readings particularly intrigued me to explore a little further, and I think It portraits the skills our children need in the near future and It also greatly inspire out teaching practices. The article categorizes the top 10 skills our children need to know as they advance further in the digital world. In the present education world, everyone is talking about the word” Digital”, Digital immigrants, digital natives, digital learning and teaching, digital citizenship, digital literacy, digital curriculum etc and I think it is pretty safe to say that digital world has arrived and will continue to flood every part of our lives in the future and education is no exception and as educators this is the world that we should be preparing students for. Digital learning which is facilitated by  direct or indirect use of technology or digital tools will be a likely game changer for educators to boost student learning and teaching moments in the classroom. Students who will be entering the future workforce will need various skills such as collaboration, tech knowledge, critical thinking, ingenuity, problem-solving etc. and as educators it is our responsibility in getting them ready for the digital community and digital future.

As my fellow classmate Amy discuss in her blog post, we are preparing students to be a better part of a community that they are already part of. We must ensure that they must be an effective and efficient digital citizen and as educators we have a unique opportunity to shape our students (digital natives) use and engage with digital tools and technologies in positive ways that can help them become successful digital citizens. I completely agree with Robyn D. Shulman while she addresses her concerns on digital citizenship in her article by stating “Digital Citizenship is more than just a curriculum to be taught in a classroom; it is an ongoing process to prepare youth for a society immersed in technology, personally and professionally” By making our students digitally literate and an efficient digital citizen we can prepare them to not just to excel in the schools, but also in the future workforce. Digital literacy is not just putting smart devices in student hands, though. Today’s students (digital natives) are born in the digital era but they are not equipped with efficient digital literacy skills, I agree the fact that they may be very comfortable using these digital tools but their understanding is always limited and this is where we as educators come in.

Finally, it leaves me with a question that, what challenges lies ahead for us as educators in this digital era to gear up our students towards the enhanced digital future? And is our current education system adequately prepared and equipped to direct our students for the digital world ahead?


The Digital Divide: Am I a digital native or an immigrant ….?

This week’s content was interesting and it kept me thinking “Who am I” ….? Am I a Digital native or an Digital Immigrant...? I had never heard of this terminology before and of course I was born after 1980 and does that make me a digital native? It was hard for me to agree to the argument of Digital Native and Digital immigrant. So, I wanted to check who I really was and I started researching over the internet of my origin in this digital era.

I found an interesting Quiz to determine my identity and I took the FIRST QUIZ  and the result surprised me when it stated that I am a digital immigrant, that’s odd I was born after 1980 and how was I am a Digital immigrant?

So, I took a  SECOND QUIZ  Alas, I’m a Digital native now! So, what exactly am I? and what is my role as a teacher in teaching children of this digital Era.

As per Prensky’s definition of digital natives, A digital native is defined as native speakers of the digital language of computers, video games, and the internet. A digital immigrant is defined as those who were not born into the digital world but later in their lives became fascinated by and adopted many or most of the new technology. After going through this week’s readings/viewing’s it came to me as a shock that there is a term called as “Digital Native and Digital Immigrant” and the world today is divided into two.  As I stated before I was really unaware of the meaning of it, So I reflected on the wordNative”. The term “Native” means “a person born in a specified place or associated with a place by birth”, thus a digital native is someone who was born into the digital era and it doesn’t mean that they are more digitally literate.


The Assumption around today’s Digital natives is that “They know it all” their experience with the digital technologies is to rapidly learn how to collaborate in a new and exhilarating ways and the only obstacle in-front of them is their Digital immigrants, But the reality is that they do not have the experience which will allow them to learn in the broader sense which is very vital in this accelerating digital world. I agree that they do possess the skills which is required to learn new tools and technology in a much faster pace but they combine that skill with poor models for rationalizing and inquiring that avert them from using their digital skills in significant ways.

The world is changing and so are our students and yes, I totally agree when Prensky  states “ today’s students are no longer the people our educational system was designed to teach” and even though I can say that I am digital native but in comparison to today’s children I see myself as an immigrant to the technology. I acknowledge the fact that today’s children are so far ahead in respect to the technological realm, that we sometimes reach out for them to help, but being a digital native is not the same as being a responsible digital citizen and that is where we come in. Our children irrespective of how tech savvy they are, they are always in need of guidance. As a teacher I see a strong need to educate our students the importance of digital identity, they are sometimes so naive that they do not understand consequences of having a negative digital reputation. They are in a digital age where everything can be googled online and privacy has become a laughing stock, our students have a long way to go and have no idea that their reputation might be at stake, they may not comprehend the consequences of what is shared via internet. We must tailor them to leave behind an appropriate digital footprint  so that it will nurture their growth.

Finally, I feel that both digital natives and digital immigrants have to develop “digital perception” and just because a person is born in a particular era doesn’t necessarily mean that they “know it all” and as for myself I am still confused whether am I a digital immigrant? Or a digital native, but I am sure that I am a responsible digital citizen and I feel it is our responsibility as a teacher to make our children an effective and efficient digital natives.

So, a fundamental question to depart with is, how would you classify yourself? Are you a digital native or a digital immigrant? And why? Do digital natives exist? If yes, what does it mean to be a digital native?


A little bit about me and a Journey to a new start in EC&I 832

Hello everyone! and welcome to my Blog! My name is Sapna Bajantri,

I am a senior mathematics lecturer from India and this is my second class with Dr.Alec Couros I am working towards my master’s in Curriculum and Instruction and this will be my third class! I am a technology hungry person and I love learning new platforms of teaching. Being a mathematics lecturer from past seven years the first thing I notice in my students is the fear of mathematics and recent integration of technologies into classrooms has made my life easier and learning Math has become a lot more fun.

Since I began my career as a teacher, I have witnessed the role of a teacher being changed drastically and evolved substantially. Emerging educational practices  have come and gone where students proceed to learn and grow. I have handled various Math courses for students from grade 12 who were preparing to enter the university to undergraduate studies  and I must confess that emerging technologies has a greater influence on my teaching practices.

As a teacher, I have always been concerned in the role that new digital technologies play both inside and outside the classroom and as an educator, I also feel that it is important that we have a concrete understanding of the digital world and of the apps and programs that our students are regularly using and hence I have decided to pursue

Option 2 as my Major project and document my Personal journey into media. The social media app that I am eager and

intrigued to review is Instagram and Snapchat.

Reaching the finish line by finding Fraction of digits Ending with 9


This blog post marks the completion of my learning project. Finally, I have successfully learned and implemented Vedic Techniques  in solving problems on Arithmetic 


operations . It was indeed fun and my journey was mesmerizing. Vedic Mathematics is a great way to make Mathematics simpler and joyful for everyone and yes, it is Magic math.

In my first blog post ,we learned what is Vedic Mathematics and how it  can make Mathematics simpler and joyful. I started this journey of learning and knowledge sharing with a great interest in the area of Vedic mathematics. My goal was to implemented Vedic Technic’s in solving problems on Arithmetic operations. My second blog post concentrated on implementing Vedic tricks in multiplication, we witnessed how easily one can multiply complex numbers in a minute and that too without using a calculator. My third and fourth blog post focused on finding Square and Square root of any numbers quickly and am sure most of us start looking for calculators if we want to find square or square root of numbers more than three digits and now we can do it mentally and that too within few seconds.

In my Fifth and Sixth blog post we learned how cool Vedic math is when it comes to finding cube and cube root of any numbers. This awe-inspiring technique helps us to easily find cube and cube root of any given digits mentally. Further Vedic Techniques made my seventh blog post more interesting by simplifying the division  process, now we can do more than just painlessly split a check. In my Ninth blog post Vedic mathematics offered a neat solution to calculate percentage  in our mind to overcome our day to day challenges.


In this blog post  we are going to learn how to convert any fraction  ending with 9 and denominator into its decimal equivalent. Vedic mathematics helps us to shorten the complex fraction process into simpler way ,In Sanskrit  this technic is called  as “Ekadhikena Purvena
To solve  fractions ending with 9 there is a Sutra or formula i.e.
BY ONE MORE THAN THE ONE BEFORE ,by using this formula let me solve two examples

Below image is a simple  illustration of the difference between usual method and Vedic method

1)Find the fraction of 1/39
i)   In 1st step, i will find the divisor ,here  the number 9 is the one before, previous             .    number of is 3 and the number 3  will be increase by 1, so we will get
.                                                       3+1=4
ii)   In 2nd step, on every example, i will start with zero point,  and  i will divide 1 by 4 i.e. 1/4 = 0.25 ,i  will  write 0.25 as 025
i.e                                              1/39=0.025
iii)   In 3rd step, i will divide 25/4, i will get remainder as 1 and quotient as 6
i.e                                             1/39=0.0256
.                                                                          1                                           (REMAINDER)   
iv)  In 4th step, i will combine remainder and quotient, it will become 16, then i will             .      divide again 16 by 4 which gives me 4
i.e.                                            1/39=0.02564 
v)  In 5th step, i am going to divide 4 by 4 which gives me the value as 1
 i.e.                                          1/39=0.02564 1
 .                                                                         1                                           (REMAINDER)  
vi) In 6th step, last digit is 1 ,if we divide 1 by 4, i will get as 0.25 again i will  write it          .      as 025,it became same as in 1st step 25 divide it by 4 gives me 1 as remainder and     as  quotient
i.e.                                           1/39=0.02564 10256

vii) In next step again we are going to combine remainder and quotient i.e.16, and i will        divide it by 4 which gives me 4 and again 4 by 4 gives me 1,i will stop up-to last           .      digit  1, if i go on solving the digit i will get recurring values ,we can stop up-to 5         .      decimal  values.
i.e.                                           1/39=0.02564 1025641

viii) Final answer :        1/39=0.025641025641

2)     Let us solve one more example.

In 7th step last digit is 2, if i divide 2 by 4, i will get the values as  0.5, i will write 0.5   .       as  05  then if i divide 5 by 4 it gives me remainder 1 and quotient 1 .

In next step again i am going to combine remainder and quotient i.e. 11 and i will             divide it by 4 which gives me 3 as remainder and 2 as quotient and again if i                  .       combine remainder and quotient and divide by   4 gives me 32/4=8,i will stop                    up- to last digit 8, if i go on solving the digit i will get recurring values .we can stop          up- to  5  decimal values.
